Easily one of the most popular one-panel syndicated newspaper cartoons of the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s, then again for a decade starting in 1997, was that of the funniest klutz ever, the lovable Herman. The brainchild of British-born Jim Unger (January 21, 1937) after he moved to Canada in 1968 and began working as a cartoonist at the Mississauga Times (greater Toronto area), the character is probably best summed up in these descriptions from the rear cover of this second of a number of treasuries:
"Herman is not chic. He is not cool. He is not one of the Beautiful People ... Herman is the universal schlemiel - a bit of you, a touch of your boss, a smattering of your brother-in-law and a lot of Jim Unger - The Washington Star;

Beginning in 1974, Herman would run as a daily panel in some 600 newspapers around the world (25 different countries) and would run to 1992. Shortly after it became established Unger moved to Canada's capital Ottawa ad sponsored the admission of his parents and brother where he would draft his daily strips from his penthouse apartment in a high-rise on Carling Avenue until 1984 when, for tax purposes, he relocated to the Bahamas where he would continue with the cartoon until his retirement in 1992. Coaxed back in June 1997, he would then produce a whole new series of panels for a new generation of fans. He also returned to Canada, taking up residence in Saanich, British Columbia. Many will also remember him as a co-founder, with Farcus creator David Waisglass, of Intraca. This uses their unique approach to humor, along with brief daily motivational messages, to raise the spirits of business workers on their PCs.
Twice the recipient of the National Cartoonists Society's Newspaper Panel Cartoon Award (1982 and 1987), Jim Unger passed away following a lengthy illness at age 75 on May 29, 2012.
But his beloved character lives on in treasuries such as this, an 8 1/2 x 11 inch volume with 206 pages divided into 8 chapters, each of which contains an introduction written by Unger further displaying his delicious and unmatched sense of humor, and crammed with some 200 panels. Here's an example of his wit from chapter 5 following a paragraph describing his stint as an insurance company employee: "About that time, my friends and I started to get really serious about girls. When you're serious about girls you're not a filing clerk, you're an airline pilot! I had to learn a whole new set of rules..."
